Metro Overhead Door opened its doors in 1984. It was started by Don Gonrowski and Pat Hoffert as an overhead door company providing 24 hour emergency service for commercial and residential garage door clients in the Portland/Metro area. Their goal over 30 years ago was to provide exceptional, timely service to all of Metro’s customers, no matter how big or small. Thirty-four years later, that same goal continues to drive Metro Overhead Door and Access Control’s 80+ employees. Our product line and services may have expanded, but our determination and vision have stayed the same. Metro Overhead Door continues to be a family run business that is big enough to tackle the largest jobs, while still caring about every customer that walks through our door or calls us on the phone.
Metro began small, but quickly began growing as customers recognized the professionalism and quality that Metro provided. It quickly outgrew Pat Hoffert’s house and moved to a small shop on Lombard in North Portland. As word spread that Metro was THE company to call, Metro had to move to a larger shop, still on Lombard. An adjacent shop was also annexed soon after. Metro bought Aloha Overhead Door in 1994 to better serve its Westside customers. Metro Overhead Door then purchased Accent Garage Door in Vancouver in 1986.
In 1999, Metro formed the Security Access Control Division. Metro Security Access Control, now Metro Access Control, focused on automatic gates and access control. In 2002, Metro purchased Ace Specialties, in business since 1967, and a long time leader in gate automation in Portland. This purchase helped cement Metro Access Control’s position as the leader in the automatic gate industry.
The purchase of Ace Specialties also forced Metro Overhead Door to move to its current location at 2525 NE Columbia Blvd. Throughout its nearly 35 years, Metro Overhead Door has continued to strive for providing excellent customer service while continuing to expand the product offering.
